BULLSHIT
Bulls#!t’ is Akala’s second release on Illa State Records – the label he co-founded with his producer Rez and sister Ms Dynamite - and sees his expressive tones tackle a stream of everyday issues. An undulating piano-riff is punctuated with drums harking back to OPP-era Naughty By Nature, but with the added contemporary twist of British Beatbox Champion Faith SFX’s vocal acrobatics. However it’s still the lyrics that do the talking as the 21-year-old tackles Bulls#!t issues ranging from the sincere (“Places where kids can’t eat....But AK47’s are free”) to the flippant (“The mutha-fucking weather in Britain.”)While modern day hip hop tracks criticising the state of the music industry may be nothing new, Akala’s assorted diatribes of everyday situations have seen ‘Bulls#!t’ become a call-and-response favourite amongst the crowd at his live dates. Recent dynamic performances include support slots for Common, Saul Williams and M.I.A. (as well as a very special guest spot at Live 8). Now, with full live band in tow, August will see Akala grace the stage at Reading, Leeds and the V Festival before returning to the studio to put the finishing touches to his forthcoming album.
